WORK PERMIT CANADA

CANADA WORK

Every year, Canada welcomes millions of foreign workers who come to meet the labor demands of Canadian employers. For these temporary positions, individuals typically require a work permit.

The Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) program grants foreign workers the opportunity to work in Canada for a specified period. It is important to note that a work permit is not considered an immigration document and does not confer permanent residency in Canada. To establish permanent residency, individuals must meet the criteria of immigration categories such as skilled worker programs.

Additionally, spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children have the option to apply for study or work permits to come to Canada.

Work permits can be extended based on job requirements, and applicants must submit renewal applications at least 30 days before their current permit expires.

Open Work Permit:
An open work permit allows foreign workers to work for any employer in Canada, except for those deemed ineligible by the Government of Canada or employers with roles related to sexual or explicit work.

Employer-Specific Work Permit:
Employer-specific work permits come with conditions stipulated on the permit, including the employer’s name, the duration of employment, and, if applicable, the location of work.

Applicant Requirements:
To obtain a work permit, a job offer approved by a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is required, except for specific exempted occupations. An LMIA confirms that a Canadian employer can hire a foreign worker to fill a vacant position. Applicants must demonstrate their intention to leave Canada once their temporary work visa expires, provide financial proof to support themselves and their accompanying family members, obey all Canadian laws, provide a police clearance certificate indicating no criminal records or activities, and demonstrate good health through a medical check. Applicants are also expected to avoid working for ineligible employers or those with job descriptions involving activities such as striptease, escort, erotic dance, or massage work.

Jobs Available Without Work Permit:
Certain occupations, including Civil Aviation Management/Aviation Accident Inspectors, Convention Organizers/Crew, Emergency Care Personnel, Examiners/Invigilators/Evaluators, Foreign Government Dignitaries/Representatives/Officers/Judges, Family Members of Foreign Diplomats, Health Care Representatives, Referees/Athletes/Coaches, Military Personnel, News/Press Reporters/Filmmakers/Support Crew, Performing Artists/Support Staff, Public Speakers, Priests/Clergy Members, do not require a work permit.
